Over the years Newport Civic Society has welcomed a number of speakers from a variety of backgrounds on the subject of how burying ‘waste’ in landfill sites was not a viable option for the long term. Various alternative ways of dealing with the ‘waste’ have been presented including ‘energy from waste plants’ through to increased means of recycling the ‘waste’ into new products.

With mounting public concern about the amount of plastic in the seas around the world; as China will no longer be recycling plastic waste from the UK and,more locally, at the recent the Pave Lane Quarry Inquiry conflicting evidence as to the type and nature of ‘waste’ that could be deposited on the site, we return to the subject with a presentation sponsored jointly with Newport 21.

The presentation will be given by Paul Frith who is an expert in waste management and leading consultant in the field of waste and resource management, he is Chair of the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management for the Midlands and a CIWM Fellow. Paul has many achievements including writing numerous municipal waste management strategies for local authorities. He also works internationally (South Africa, India, Indonesia, Cyprus, Australia, Malta) on waste technology, strategy and smart cities development. He has worked with over forty local authorities, county councils and waste partnerships on service reviews, efficiencies for collection services, recycling and treatment, options appraisals and innovation.

In the UK Alzheimer’s disease affects 1 in 3 over 65s and is now the main cause of death for women and the 3rd for men. Its impact is devastating on families and the need for more research into its causes is overwhelming.

Alzheimer’s Research UK is the leading dementia research charity, founded 1992: its mission is “to find a life-changing treatment by 2025”

Katie Foster chairs the official Alzheimer’s Research UK Shropshire Fundraising Group and will give a quick insight into the latest research findings and initiatives and how you can help and be involved.

She’ll also be bringing something suitably festive and bubbly for the fundraising raffle – the proceeds of which will be shared between the two charities!

In addition, Phil Gillam will be giving an overview of the Alzheimer’s Society’s project to develop Newport as a dementia-friendly town, shedding light on what a Dementia Action Alliance is all about, and explaining how the local community will be at the heart of sustaining dementia-friendly actions and attitudes.

Last year the subject of the lecture was ‘What will BREXIT mean for Shropshire’. This year, as one of the many questions about our future in a post-BREXIT Britain, ‘education’ is the theme: looking at how education should be delivered, political interference in education both as to curriculum and to the quality/standard of education delivery in both content and method, as well as how education should be funded – from tuition fees through to parental contribution both financial and qualitatively from infant school to Higher Education.

The debate on the night will centre on:-
“EDUCATION, EDUCATION, EDUCATION”
We probably know who said that there were only three priorities? Unfortunately or fortunately, that individual will not be with us but….

Jim Collins (ex Associate Director Education & Corporate Parenting with T&W Council and former Secondary Head Teacher) will spend the evening discussing the current priorities and challenges facing the people responsible for delivering “Education” to our young people.

Jim will help untangle the mysterious and rapidly changing world of education. He will not only explain the issues but also provide advice as to how your children can gain maximum benefit from their education.

As our economy becomes more and more knowledge-based (has it ever been anything else?) it is imperative that our education services are competitive with the best in the world – this will be a professional glimpse behind the scenes about what we as a nation and what our children need to do.

Come and take part in the debate and add your voice to one of the most critical challenges facing the future of our country.

Laurie Jamie [ General Manager – Serco ] will spend the evening with Newport Society talking about the wonderful National Sports Centre on Newport’s doorstep. The presentation will take in a little of the history of the site from Duke of Sutherland’s hunting lodge to H.M. The Queen to The Sport’s Council.

Of course no tale of Lilleshall would be complete without some reference to “1966 and all that” – for the uninitiated it was the base for Alf Ramsey’s World Cup winning squad – football.

Today the Centre houses facilities for World class sportsmen and women in a variety of sports but still manages to accommodate Regional and local Community competitors. However the complex is much, much more than just a “Sports Centre” and Laurie will explain the range of other opportunities that are on offer.

Currently undergoing a very significant facelift the Centre is a wonderful example of how “Excellence” can be delivered on a variety of fronts thanks to Sport England and Serco.

At our speaker meeting on 31 January 2017, Yvonne Tweddle, Marketing Manager for Jupiter Marketing Ltd extended an invitation for Newport Society to visit the Jupiter premises to view the production process/facilities.
The visit has now been set for 2 pm on Tuesday 30 May 2017.
The assembly point for the visit is outside the Nova House offices on the Enterprise Park.
Parking is limited on the Enterprise Park so it would be appreciated if visitors could park off site and walk to the premises.

Not everyone knows that we have a National Nature Reserve on our doorstep but we do – at Aqualate Mere just 3 miles east of Newport.
Adam Dempsey, the Reserve Manager at the Aqualate Mere National Nature Reserve, will give a presentation about this valuable site covering changes at the reserve in the last year and some exciting new projects in the near future as well as some interesting recent sightings and wildlife highlights – apparently some unusual visitors have been dropping in over the winter.

Newport Society (Newport and District Civic Society) will be hosting Cllr. Lyn Fowler, the Mayor of Newport, at its meeting on Tuesday 29th November 2016.

Cllr. Fowler will talk about the challenges facing Newport and her vision for its future.

The Newport Society is hosting the Second Annual Newport Lecture, at which Mark Pritchard MP for the Wrekin, will give a talk on the subject of ‘What will Brexit mean for Shropshire’.
The talk will take place on Friday 21st October 2016, commencing at 7.30 pm at Newport Girls High School, Wellington Road, Newport TF10 7HL.
Everyone of all ages is invited to attend to hear the views on what is the topic of the moment but with an emphasis on the implications for Shropshire.
Admission is free. Refreshments will be available. Car parking is available on site.

“Mark has represented The Wrekin since 2005. He was re-elected for a third term in May 2015 with the largest majority in the history of The Wrekin’s parliamentary history.

He served as a UK Representative to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly (2005-2010) and as a Member of the UK’s Joint National Security Strategy Committee (2010-2015).

He is now a Member of the Joint Human Rights Committee.
